Youngbiz vs Average PLC?

Posted by: , Posted on: - Categories: Employer surveys, Research

The UK Commission produced this infographic to highlight some of the key findings from the UK Commission's Employer Perspectives Survey. The survey indicates that businesses born in the depths of the recession are more optimistic and demonstrate greater commitment to developing their people.

Are you surprised with these findings? We would welcome your feedback. Let us know your thoughts and please share!

If young businesses are taking on more people with none of the skills that the role requires then they have to do more training. Also as a start up company they may not be able to afford long recruitment processes so have to rely on word of mouth or social media. These statistics do not show if they do this through choice or necessity. They also don't show whether they think these processes have worked well or not. They may have hired young people because they cost less than older, more experienced people. I'm not knocking the need for training or social media recruitment processes, or the hiring of young staff, but as they stand these statistics tell us very little.

    Hi Liz -

It’s often the case that research, and particularly surveys, raises more questions, and you’ve raised some good ones here. But this data does give us a good place to start in looking at the question of why certain groups of employers behave differently to others.

The evidence indicates that there is more to this than the cost of recruiting a YP because the provision of training and engagement with Apprenticeships is strong. Whatever your take on this, it does provide food for thought for those who are supporting young people’s to access work, and to those supporting young businesses.

Surveys never provide all the answers, but they can highlight areas like this one where further research would be of value.
